School Work: Innovative Designs for Education exhibition

Due to our experience in the design of learning environments, Workshop Architecture was selected to participate in an exhibition called “School Work: Innovative Designs for Education” at the Harbourfront Centre’s Architecture Gallery in 2013.

Our contribution to the exhibition was a classroom installation exploring the relationship between multi-directional teaching environments, movement and learning. According to Dr. Breithecker’s Body-Brain Theory, there is a connection between movement and the ability to learn. Static posture can lead to poor oxygen supply. The type of fidgeting, twisting and moving that we often discourage actually increases students’ ability to concentrate by increasing blood flow to the brain.

As part of the exhibition, we developed a take-away exercise for teachers to work with their students to test classroom configuration ideas.
